Frequently Asked Questions

About the Transition

Q: What exactly is happening?
A: In May 2025, a new nonprofit organization called The Self-Direction Center (SDC) will launch. The Self-Direction Center will focus on education, community building, and research in self-direction. Applied Self-Direction (ASD) will continue as a separate organization focused on technical assistance and consulting services.

Q: Why is this transition happening?
A: This transition allows for expanded resources and specialized focus in the self-direction field. The Self-Direction Center will be able to prioritize education, community building, and research initiatives, while Applied Self-Direction will continue to provide technical expertise and consulting services to states and organizations implementing self-direction programs.

Q: Will the organizations compete with each other?
A: No. Applied Self-Direction and The Self-Direction Center have distinct missions and service offerings that complement rather than compete with each other. Both organizations are committed to strengthening self-direction and will collaborate as partners in the field.

Q: Who will be leading The Self-Direction Center?
A: The Self-Direction Center is co-founded by Erica Andres, Molly Morris, and Brenda Vitale. Molly and Brenda will conclude their tenure on the ASD staff on 5/1/25 to support the nonprofit launch. Erica is remaining on the staff at ASD. Erica, Molly, and Brenda are serving as the initial board members. In the coming months, the board will expand to include members who are representative of the national self-direction community. Ultimately, at least fifty percent of the board will be composed of people with lived experience in self-direction, primarily participants themselves, as well as authorized representatives.
