Opinion: State’s program helping those with disabilities should be embraced across U.S.

In 1969, the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act, now known as the Lanterman Act, was passed by the California Legislature. But the words in the Lanterman Act weren’t actualized until the launch of the Self-Determination Program, a program which allows regional center clients to have “more freedom, control and responsibility in choosing services and supports to help them meet objectives in their individual program plan.” California’s Self-Determination Program — created by a 2013 state law — is the reason why me and so many other autistic individuals have been able to get services and items we otherwise wouldn’t be able to get.
