Home and community-based services allow veterans to “age in place” while receiving the care and support they need. They also cost less than institutional care facilities. As these U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) programs expand, it will be important to make them available to all veterans who would benefit from them. Although the Veteran-Directed Care Program is not yet available across all regions, President Biden signed an executive order in April 2023 calling for the program's expansion to all VA medical centers by the end of fiscal year 2024.
