Research shows that fraud occurs in self-direction at about the rate of traditional services, with lower incidences of fraud in programs with mature FMS. A Florida woman has been arrested on allegations that she stole $180,000 from Medicaid over the course of four years. She served as a representative for someone in a self-direction program and is accused of submitting false time records and pocketing the pay via debit cards registered in the names of previous caregivers.
