Families and advocates for disabled Texans pushing for caregiver pay raise
A state Medicaid program pays caregivers of intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals living in community-based homes. Families, advocates and providers want lawmakers to increase that hourly pay. Marisa Luparello is among a collective of Texas families, service providers and community leaders who say the state has failed to provide and fund quality care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at home or via community services. They are calling on state legislators to raise wages for direct support professionals, caregivers whose base hourly wage in Texas is $10.60, a rate advocates say is inadequate to recruit and retain quality staff.
