Vermont considers paying parent caregivers of adults with disabilities

Initially viewed as a stopgap measure, paying family members has emerged as a potential solution to the chronic shortage of professional caregivers in Vermont. But while many parents support the idea, advocates say the state should spend its money elsewhere: raising wages to attract more professional workers, for instance, or creating more group homes where people with developmental disabilities could live apart from their families.
